Cosmetic Standards & Terms Agreement

Thank you for choosing Sawdust & Splinters for your handcrafted furniture. We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to build something unique for your home. Before placing your order, please review the following Cosmetic Standards & Terms Agreement. By placing your order, you acknowledge that you have read, understand, and agree to the terms outlined below.

Cosmetic Standards

At Sawdust & Splinters, every piece of furniture is handcrafted using solid wood, making each piece truly one of a kind. Because wood is a natural material and every piece is built by hand, variations in appearance are expected and are considered part of the beauty and character of handcrafted furniture, not defects.

Wood & Stain Variations

Every board has its own grain pattern, density, and natural color. As a result, stain colors and finished appearance will vary from piece to piece. While we will use the stain or paint color selected for your order, we cannot guarantee an exact match to previous projects, showroom photos, or online images.

These natural variations are an expected characteristic of solid wood furniture and are not considered defects.

Matching Stain Colors

We do not match stain colors from photographs. If you require a specific custom stain, you must provide the stain along with the desired wood species. Because every species, and every board within that species, accepts stain differently, exact color matches cannot be guaranteed.

Sanding & Stain

The level of sanding affects how wood accepts stain. Finely sanded surfaces typically produce lighter, cleaner color tones, while more textured or distressed surfaces absorb more stain and appear darker.

If you are selecting a stain based on a photo of a distressed table but ordering a smooth finish, please expect the final appearance to differ.

Band Sawn / Circle Sawn

Band sawn and circle sawn tops are intentionally textured to showcase a rustic appearance. Small waves, saw marks, and surface variations are normal characteristics of these tops.

In some areas, additional sanding may be necessary to ensure a functional, usable tabletop. Because of this, some sections may contain fewer visible saw marks than others.

General Variations in Furniture

Handcrafted solid wood furniture may naturally include:

  • Open knots, unless knot filling is specifically noted on your invoice
  • Small splits, checks, cracks, and natural character marks
  • Wood filler where appropriate
  • Minor textural or finish variations
  • Visible glue joints
  • Slight dimensional variation of up to approximately 1 inch due to the custom nature of each build

These characteristics are expected in handcrafted solid wood furniture and are not considered defects.

Wood Movement

Solid wood naturally expands and contracts with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. Small gaps, minor movement, and subtle changes in appearance are a normal part of owning solid wood furniture.

These natural characteristics do not affect the structural integrity of the furniture and are not considered defects.

Open Knots

Open knots are part of the natural beauty and character of solid wood. Unless knot filling is specifically listed on your invoice, open knots will remain visible and are considered an intentional design feature.

Lifetime Structural Warranty

We proudly stand behind our craftsmanship.

Every handcrafted piece built by Sawdust & Splinters includes a Lifetime Structural Warranty. This warranty is fully transferable to future owners of the furniture.

This warranty covers structural failures resulting from defects in our workmanship or from natural cracking, splitting, or warping of the wood that affects the structural integrity of the furniture during normal residential use.

This warranty does not cover:

  • Normal seasonal wood movement
  • Minor surface checking or cosmetic cracks
  • Changes in color caused by sunlight or aging
  • Damage resulting from abuse, misuse, neglect, accidents, improper storage, excessive moisture, extreme humidity, improper care, or modifications made by others
  • Normal wear and tear

If a covered structural issue occurs, Sawdust & Splinters will repair or replace the affected component at our discretion.

Down Payment & Cancellation Policy

Down Payment

A 70% non interest bearing down payment is required to reserve your place in our production queue and begin purchasing materials for your custom project.

Your place in our production queue is secured only after your down payment has been received. Queue placement is based on the date your down payment is received, not the date of your initial inquiry, estimate, or invoice.

Any projected start date or completion date provided is an estimate only and should not be considered a guaranteed production or delivery date. Our production queue is fluid and may change based on the depth of the queue, production variables, material availability, supplier delays, equipment maintenance, weather, illness, and the natural variability involved in building handcrafted solid wood furniture.

While we always strive to meet or exceed our estimated timelines, our priority is delivering a piece that meets our quality standards rather than rushing production to meet a specific date.

The remaining balance is due upon completion and must be paid prior to delivery or pickup.

Cancellation Policy

  • If your order is canceled within 7 calendar days of placing your deposit, 80% of your deposit will be refunded.
  • If your order is canceled after 7 calendar days, your deposit becomes non refundable, as materials will have been purchased and production time, scheduling, and shop resources will have been committed specifically to your project.
  • If significant design changes are requested after production has begun, additional charges may apply. You will be responsible for the cost of any materials already purchased or used, any additional materials required, and any labor necessary to accommodate the requested changes.

Thank you for trusting Sawdust & Splinters with your project. We are committed to building furniture that will serve your family for generations while celebrating the natural beauty and uniqueness of solid wood.

By placing your order with Sawdust & Splinters, you acknowledge that you have read, understand, and agree to the terms of this Cosmetic Standards & Terms Agreement.
